Diversity as a concept helps us to understand that society is made up of diverse members with diverse cultures, religion and so on. Often emphasis is placed on the negative aspects of the differences by both those who belong to a majority culture and those from a minority culture. Diversity on the other hand can be a positive factor, by building upon the strengths of the diverse members each of whom have something to contribute given the chance and proper opportunities. In the USA, a diversified work force is considered a plus factor per se and is also advocated by law.

Every year, in the summer time, there is a world harmony fair organized by Snug Harbor on Staten Island (one of the five boroughs of New York); the fair provides a show case with presentations by groups from different cultures and parts of the world and everybody has an opportunity to watch different musical performances each characterized by harmony; there is also an opportunity to taste a variety of food from different parts of the world. The fair is an enjoyable experience but more importantly plays a role in fostering understanding and accommodation among people with different cultural background.
