CIVIL SOCIETY

Civil society is a concept according to which members of a particular society get together and perform activities in the joint interest of society and of its members; the activities can be qualified as 'group' project, in other words of such a nature that they are usually undertaken by joint effort. For example, special effort to cleaning of a public park; of course, the work can be carried out by a public or private organization which would usually need to have the necessary resources to do so. In the case of civil society, members would volunteer their time and effort. Applying the civil society concept, neighborhood watch groups have been set up to complement the work of the police and make particular neighborhood safer. Often ventures by members of civil society are called 'grass root' organizations; however, it should be pointed out that all segments of society can be involved. For example, a country decree a national day on which all members of society will come out on the street and clean various parts of a city, beautify it by planting and so on and so forth. A good example of a civil society venture is that of New York Cares (www.nycares.org).
